Victoria & Albert Museum acquires David Bowie archives

The archive includes handwritten lyrics of songs like “Fame” or “Heroes”, but also sketches, letters, costumes, stage elements, instruments and unrealized projects that have never been shown publicly. This also includes shots by well-known photographers such as Terry O’Neill and Helmut Newton. Curator Kate Bailey says the archive is “fascinating” as it shows Bowie dedicated his life to art. “It allows insights into the creative process of his music videos, songs and stage shows.”

The acquisition of the archive and the construction of the Bowie Center were made possible through a collaboration with the David Bowie Estate and a £10m donation from the Blavatnik Family Foundation and Warner Music Group. Bowie was considered an extremely versatile pop artist who created fictional characters such as Ziggy Stardust and Thin White Duke. Born David Robert Jones, the musician has sold more than 100 million records over the course of his career.
