After the ambient madness that surrounded his selection as number 1 in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama has his eyes turned towards preparing for the next NBA season. Obviously, questions are being asked today regarding its use by the Spurs. That’s good, we’re starting to have some answers as training camp approaches.
When you have a 2m24 phenom joining your team, the possibilities seem limitless. With his size, mobility and generational talent, Wemby will obviously be the central piece around which the San Antonio franchise will be built in the years to come.
But what is Spurs’ plan for Victor’s debut in the big leagues? Insider Shams Charania is here to provide us with details regarding its future use.
You might say the Spurs had an eventful offseason…

According to Shams, it is at position 4 (power forward) that Victor Wembanyama will be aligned at the start of the season, with Zach Collins to take the pivot spot alongside him.
While it may be strange to see a 2m24 player playing in a position other than that of pivot, the power forward position seems to suit Wemby better because it should give him more freedom, particularly on the offensive level. A few months ago, Victor had also declared that the pivot position was not his favorite, he who likes to be inflated in the perimeter as much as to dominate near the baskets.
But above all, at this stage of his development, Wembanyama is probably not yet sufficiently physically armed to deal with the biggest pivots in defense (Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic and Co). So you might as well leave this mission to Zach Collins, while Wemby will use his defensive versatility as well as his mutant wingspan to defend post 4 and do damage in assist.
Throughout Victor Wembanyama’s first season at the Spurs, it will be very interesting to see how Gregg Popovich uses his new gem, both in terms of minutes and his role and responsibilities. We will have a first glimpse on October 9, during his first preseason match once morest Oklahoma City.
