Victor Kiplangat gave Africa its 12th consecutive world title in the men’s marathon. The 23-year-old Ugandan won in 2:08:53 on Sunday in Budapest. The only Swiss entered following Adrian Lehmann’s package, Simon Tesfay gave up following the 30th km.

Winner of the 2022 Commonwealth Games marathon, Victor Kiplangat was 19” ahead of the Israeli Maru Teferi (2nd) and 26” the Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase (3rd) on Heroes’ Square. He is the second Ugandan to become world champion on the mythical distance, ten years following Stephen Kiprotich.

Just ranked among the 100 best performers in history with 2h05’09”, Victor Kiplangat took the lead shortly following the 30th km in the company of Leul Gebresilase. He placed a decisive acceleration following 38 km, Gebresilase cracking even in the last hectometres to cede silver to Teferi.

Simon Tesfay (38) did not complete his first race in Swiss colours. Eligible to represent Switzerland since June 17, the Zurich native of Eritrean origin threw in the towel following the 30th km when he was 9′ behind and was no longer able to hang on the Olympic limit (2h08′ 10”).
