Victoires de la musique 2022: Belgium sets the mood with Stromae, Angèle and Damso, but it is Orelsan who triumphs

10:20 p.m. It has been barely an hour since the kick-off of the 37th Victoires de la Musique was given that the male Artist is already known. Considered one of the queen categories, it was usually awarded at the end of the ceremony, at no time.

It was Orelsan who was rewarded, in the wake of the colossal success of his album Civilization. This is the second time that he has won the prize following the 2019 edition. This is his 9th Victory in total. Because at the start of the ceremony, he had already won the Audiovisual Creation category awarded by the public to the documentary Never show that to anyone. A price there also amply deserved, in particular for the brother of the rapper who signs this excellent production. The latter does not only retrace the career of Orelsan, it reveals its emergence, a rare thing.

One cannot however avoid wondering if it is legitimate to put in competition clips and what it is advisable to call in film. Don’t see any jealousy there because Angèle didn’t win, it’s just that the two exercises don’t play in the same division. Given the number of documentaries regarding artists that are distilled, both on television and on streaming platforms, why not create a specific category? Yes, but that will lengthen a ceremony that usually already drags on, right? Not false…

Except that the Victories seem to have, this time, found a much more exciting formula than in the past. A beneficial effect of the disastrous audiences recorded by appointments of the genre such as the Oscars and the Césars last year? Who knows. Forget the long speeches, the sketches that fall flat, the endless thanks and the presentations and sequences as long as a day without bread. Make way for music, lots of live music. Stromae opened the ball with “Santé”. As honorary president of the evening, we expected a speech but it was with his title that he launched the evening. So much the better.

In the followingmath, Angèle interpreted “Bruxelles, je t’aime”, with a big surprise: the presence of Damso when she continued with “Démons”, her latest single. The Dems was not cut in the editing unlike the broadcast of the title on certain French radios where its passage in rap is sweet.

Only small error in passing for Angèle, but a confusion that will make people talk on the networks. She was perched on a waffle to sing. Yes, but a waffle from Liège and not from Brussels…

Whatever. This is the music that reigns during these 37th Victories. Jacques Dutronc received a trophy of honor. He sang with his son Thomas. Julien Doré performed from a barge and not the Seine Musicale plateau where the event is taking place. Clara Luciani shook the public with two titles in barely an hour, including a very beautiful tribute to Patrick Juvet. A disco “Where are the women” at will, like the color of her own album.

Orelsan splashed the evening with his talent for the first 90 minutes. Just like Juliette Armanet or even Hervé or Hoshi with a magnificent interpretation of a title dedicated to her hearing problems. Heart touching. More than deserved standing ovation.

Music, live and a sober and dynamic presentation at the same time by Olivier Minne and Laury Thilleman. The formula seems to be winning. The audiences will tell tomorrow.
