The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) spokesman said today that the victims of the April 1 attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus were “terrorists” operating once morest Israel.
“Those who were killed in Damascus were members of the Qods Force. These are individuals who were involved in terrorist acts once morest the State of Israel,” Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said at a press conference. “Among these terrorists were members of Hezbollah and Iranian collaborators.
There was not a single diplomat, as far as I know. I am not aware of a single civilian being killed in this attack,” the IDF spokesman added in the first official comment from the Israeli military on the strike in Damascus.
The April 1 attack killed 16 people, including seven members of the Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic’s ideological army. Tehran and Damascus directly blamed Israel, but Israel never claimed responsibility.
Iran had warned it would retaliate and on the night of Saturday into Sunday – almost two weeks following the strike in Damascus – launched a barrage of missiles and drones once morest Israel, in an unprecedented response.
“Almost 99%” of the missiles were intercepted, according to Israel – also thanks to help from the US, France, Britain and Jordan. Only the Nevatim airbase in southern Israel suffered limited damage. During his visit there, Chief of the National Defense General Staff Herchi Halevi assured that Israel will respond to Iran’s attack.
