ATHUS/LUXEMBOURG – Resident of Bonnevoie, Patricia bought a used car in a garage in Athus and was the victim of a scam.

The car bought at the beginning of March by Patricia chained the breakdowns.

Of course, when she bought, at the beginning of March, for 3,750 euros a 2002 vehicle with 97,000 kilometers on the clock in a garage in Athus (Belgium), Patricia knew that she was not buying a new car. But the artist from Bonnevoie did not expect such a hassle.

That day, she pays 2,000 euros down payment and leaves “happy” to have bought “her very first car”. On March 17, she gets it back. But on the return trip, she notices an abnormal noise. By telephone, he is assured that all the tests have been done and “that the vehicle is in good condition”.

Then, according to the complaint she filed on April 4, the worries are linked. “Four days following the purchase, the car broke down and had to be towed,” says the customer. The passage to the workshop in Messancy does not improve the situation, according to Patricia, who describes a car which “cuts in full journey, causing him a fright on the highway”. It also lists problems with brakes and engine light on.

Judicial investigation in progress

On March 30, she even requested a full diagnosis from ACL Luxembourg. Corrosion, brakes, suspensions… it is final. More than ten points are to be repaired. “I don’t understand how she was able to pass the technical control in Belgium”, is surprised Patricia, who says she has sent many emails to the garage. In vain. “He refuses to take back my vehicle to repair it, despite the guarantee”.

Via a Facebook group, she collects dozens of other testimonies. And even made an appearance to tell his misadventure in an RTBF TV show. “These garages also sell their vehicles in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, through online sales sites, which is also how I found my car,” she describes.

Deputy Crown Prosecutor, Anne-Sophie Guilmot confirms to The essential that “a judicial investigation is in progress, that the file is voluminous and concerns many plaintiffs”. Like the police, however, it refuses to issue any details on the complaints.

No scam according to the garage

Contacted by The essential, the garage, for its part, strongly denounces these accusations. “Our company has been selling between 450 and 500 vehicles per year for several years. In the event of a complaint, we have an following-sales service and a mechanical workshop to restore the vehicle to the best possible condition.

We guarantee the engine and gearbox of our vehicles, but not the wearing parts, as is clearly indicated on the purchase invoices”, specifies the management.

“When our customers encounter problems, our following-sales service intervenes quickly,” continues the garage, which protests once morest the use of the term “scam”. Justice works efficiently. If we were not in good standing, we would certainly have had to cease our activities a long time ago”.
