British writer Salman Rushdie who was stabbed by an individual in upstate New York on Friday is on life support and is at risk of losing an eye as a result of the attack, reports the New York Times quoting his agent .
“The news is not good,” wrote his agent in an email sent to the American media, adding that Rushdie might lose an eye while his liver had also been damaged.
Rushdie, author of the controversial novel “The Satanic Verses” was stabbed in the neck and stomach by a 24-year-old from New Jersey, news reports said, noting that the motives for the attack remain unknown.
Aged 75, Rushdie was preparing to give a literary conference in an amphitheater in Chautauqua, in the north-west of the State of New York, very close to Lake Erie which separates the United States from Canada.
The person who was to give the floor to the writer was also “slightly injured in the head”, according to the police.
The novel “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988. A year later, Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for the death of the author.
