The Korean government expressed regret to the French government, saying that some Korean electric vehicles will no longer receive benefits due to the recent reform of France’s electric vehicle subsidy system.
First Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Jang Young-jin met with French Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Olivier Besht in Seoul this morning to express regret and request cooperation on pending trade issues.
Previously, on the 14th, the French government released a list of electric vehicle subsidy reform applications, the so-called ‘French version of IRA’. As France gave unfavorable environmental scores to cars produced far from the country, there was absolutely no list of 79 types of vehicles eligible for subsidies. Many were filled with European products.
Accordingly, most electric vehicles produced not only in Korea but also in countries such as China and Japan were excluded from subsidies.
Among Korean cars, the Hyundai Kona, produced in Europe, was included in the subsidy target, but the Kia Niro, produced and exported in Korea, was excluded.
In response to this, Vice Minister Jang asked Minister Besht to pay attention to expediting the formal objection process to be carried out by the Korean government and industry so that Niro can have its carbon emissions recalculated in the future.
In addition, Vice Minister Jang proposed strengthening cooperation between the two countries in areas such as carbon-free energy, including nuclear power plants, aviation and space, and research and development.
