VIBES Ingestible Electronic Biostimulator – The Weight Loss Solution Without Surgery or Side Effects

The stomach usually sends signals to the brain to report that it is full and that enough food has been eaten. What is new is that scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found a way to simulate this mechanism using a vibrating bead, and it can help reduce appetite and may contribute to the treatment of obesity, according to what was published by the website. New Atlas, cited in Science Advances.

Suppress the desire to eat more

It is known that following eating, the stomach physically expands to accommodate the meal, thereby releasing sensitive cells called mechanoreceptors, thus sending signals to the brain to release hormones such as insulin, C-peptide, PyY, and GLP-1, which together aid in digestion, trigger a feeling of fullness, and suppress the desire to continue eating. the food.

Artificial stimulation of the feeling of fullness

For the new study, the MIT scientists set out to see if they might leverage this system to artificially stimulate the desire to stop eating early, to help patients with eating disorders and related health concerns.

“I wondered if we might activate stretch receptors in the stomach by vibrating them and make them aware that the entire stomach has expanded, to create an illusory sensation of bloating that might modify hormones and eating patterns,” said Shriya Srinivasan, the study’s lead researcher.

Electronic biostimulator

To achieve this, the researchers developed what they call the VIBES Ingestible Electronic Biostimulator Pill, which is a capsule that contains a vibrating motor powered by a small silver oxide battery. The capsule begins vibrating as soon as it enters the stomach, where the acid dissolves the membrane and completes the circuit. Once activated, it vibrates. pill for approximately 30 minutes.

The team tested VIBES pills on laboratory animals, and their hormones were tracked while they were active. It was confirmed that the patterns of hormone release were similar to those that normally occur following a meal, even if the treated laboratory animals were fasted. It was also found that animals given the capsules 20 minutes before eating consumed approximately 40% less food than they would without the “jiggly” pills, and gained weight more slowly.

Deep behavioral change

“The behavioral change is profound, using the endogenous system rather than any exogenous treatment,” said Giovanni Traverso, the study’s lead researcher, noting that there is “the potential to overcome some of the challenges and costs associated with biologic drug delivery by modulating the enteric nervous system.”

Without surgery and no side effects

The “vibrating” pill has also been confirmed to pass through the digestive tract following four or five days, and does not appear to cause any blockages, perforations or other problems on its journey. The researchers indicate that a modified version can be made to stay in the stomach for a longer period, as it can be turned on and off wirelessly before meals.

The team of researchers say VIBES pills might be an attractive alternative to appetite-suppressing drugs, which can have unwanted side effects, or more invasive surgeries such as gastric bypass.
