Viagra Boys on ‘Man Made of Meat’: Existential Angst Meets a Sonic Adventure

Viagra Boys, the Swedish post-punk provocateurs, are back with their highly anticipated self-titled album, “Viagra Boys,” set to drop on April 25th via Shrimptech Enterprises. This sonic journey promises to delve into the depths of societal decay, grapple with the ever-growing influence of technology, and ultimately explore the universal human quest for meaning in a world teetering on the edge of chaos.
replacing predictable angst with their signature blend of existential dread and dark humor, the band has promised to push boundaries while staying true to their post-punk roots.

Frontman Sebastian Murphy offered a glimpse into the album’s themes, stating, “I’d say ‘Viagra Boys’ is a sonic adventure that spans eleven tracks, exploring themes like societal decay, technology’s impact on us, and the constant search for meaning in a chaotic world. We’ve experimented with new sounds while keeping the post-punk essence that our fans love. It’s been an exciting process.”

The Existential Horror Show of ‘Man Made of Meat’

Eager fans have already gotten a taste of the album’s darkly captivating sound with the release of “Man Made of meat”. This track, which showcases the band’s talent for blending compelling visuals with thought-provoking lyrics, is a potent exploration of modern anxieties.

the music video for “Man Made of Meat” acts as a visual metaphor for the song’s themes, with the director’s creative use of imagery heightening the sense of unease and alienation that permeates the track.

Murphy hints at upcoming shows, mentioning a tour that will take them across continents, from the bustling streets of Berlin to the vibrant music scene of Austin.

Viagra Boys’ latest album, ‘Viagra Boys’

explores themes of alienation, despair, and the modern human experience with brutal honesty.

The lead single, ‘Man Made of Meat’, is a prime example of this raw aesthetic, snarling with emotional vulnerability about the disconnect between our physicality and the endless, often futile, online world.Sebastian Murphy, the band’s frontman, explains, “’Man Made of Meat’ is a great example of where we’re at right now. It started with this idea of contrasting the physicality of being human – ‘man made of meat’ – with the endless, frequently enough fruitless searching we do online. The lyrics are quite personal, reflecting my own frustrations with what I see on the internet and my desire to disconnect sometimes. it’s a raw, honest look at modern existence.”

The accompanying music video, directed by johannes greve Lund, visually captures these themes through powerful solo dance performances. Each dancer is lost in their own world, highlighting the isolation and disconnection that permeates modern life. Murphy describes the video as a “powerful visual representation of the song’s message.”

Taking control of their creative destiny, Viagra Boys have launched their own label, Shrimptech Enterprises, for this album. This decision provides the band with greater autonomy over their art, allowing them to make choices aligned with their vision and artistic direction. “Having our own label gives us more control and freedom over our art. We can make decisions that align with our vision without having to consider anyone else’s agenda. It’s exciting and a bit scary, but it’s definitely where we want to be,” says Murphy. This new chapter promises exciting possibilities for the band, both creatively and commercially.

Sharing the Chaos and the Laughter

Looking towards the future, Murphy hopes listeners connect with the album’s honesty and rawness. “I hope they feel seen. I hope they hear these songs and think, ‘Yes, I feel that too.’ I hope they find comfort in the chaos, laughter in the darkness, and maybe even a new outlook on their own experiences,” he says.

Ultimately, ‘viagra Boys’ aims to be a lyrical reflection of the complexities of the modern world, inviting listeners to embrace the chaos and find solace in shared experiences.

How does Viagra Boys’ music balance existential angst with humor?

[Archyde Interview: Sebastian Murphy of Viagra Boys]

Archyde: Sebastian, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Let’s dive right in – your new album,”Viagra Boys,” is set to drop later this month. What can fans expect from this record?

Sebastian Murphy: Thanks for having me. I’d say “Viagra Boys” is a sonic adventure that spans eleven tracks, exploring themes like societal decay, technology’s impact on us, and the constant search for meaning in a chaotic world. We’ve experimented with new sounds while keeping the post-punk essence that our fans love. It’s been an exciting process.

Archyde: The first single, “Man Made of Meat,” has already created quite a buzz. Can you tell us more about this track and its accompanying video?

Sebastian: Absolutely. “Man Made of Meat” is a potent exploration of modern anxieties. The song opens with the raw lyric, “I am a man that’s made of meat/ you’re on the internet looking at feet/ I hate almost everything that I see/ And I just wanna disappear,” which really sets the tone for the whole album.

The music video for “Man Made of Meat” acts as a visual metaphor for the song’s themes. It shows me as a character in a decaying landscape, trying to escape from various absurd and surreal situations. It’s a darkly humorous take on the existential dread that many of us feel in today’s world.

archyde: Speaking of dark humor, Viagra Boys has always had a unique way of blending existential angst with humor. How do you balance these two elements in your music?

Sebastian: I think humor is a coping mechanism for a lot of people, myself included. When you’re dealing with heavy themes like existential dread or societal decay, it’s vital to have a bit of levity to keep things from getting to heavy. We want our music to make people think, but we also want them to have a good time.

Archyde: You’ve mentioned that the album explores the influence of technology on society. Can you elaborate on that?

Sebastian: Sure. I think technology has become such a pervasive part of our lives that it’s starting to change how we interact with each other and the world around us. It can be isolation or disconnection, but it can also be used to connect people across vast distances. The album explores these contradictions and the consequences of this technological landscape.

Archyde: You’ll be kicking off your global tour with performances at coachella. How does it feel to be bringing “Viagra Boys” to the stage for the first time?

Sebastian: I’m really excited. Coachella is an amazing festival with such a diverse lineup. We’ve played it before, but this time we’re bringing new music and new energy. It’s going to be a great way to start the tour and introduce our fans to the new tracks.

archyde: Lastly, what advice would you give to someone who’s about to listen to “Viagra boys” for the first time?

sebastian: I’d say, open your mind and let the music take you on a journey. This album is an exploration of the darker sides of society and human nature, but it’s also a party of our shared experience. So buckle up, turn it up loud, and enjoy the ride.

Archyde: Thank you, Sebastian. We’re all looking forward to hearing “Viagra Boys.”

Sebastian: Thank you, it’s been a pleasure. Can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
