The president of the Legislature, Guadalupe Llori, concluded the session in which the issue was to be analyzed, following the Constitutional Court refrained from assessing the presidential veto and ordered the Legislature to follow the regular process.

with a brief “The session is suspended, have a good holiday!”, Llori settled any option for parliamentary debate, without giving way to motions aimed at reaching a resolution on the Executive’s veto of the legislation that regulates the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in cases of rape in the country.

Last February, the Parliament passed legislation regulating abortion for rape following the Constitutional Court decriminalized this cause in 2021.

Last month, Lasso announced his decision to include 61 “alternative texts” to the regulations discussed in the Legislative, which had 63 articles, considering that it supposedly did not agree with the ruling of the High Court.

Among the conservative-leaning president’s suggestions are that the twelve-week term be unified in cases of abortion due to rape and he did not accept the 18-week exception that was set for girls, adolescents, indigenous people, and women in rural areas.

He also proposed “requirements” for access to abortion for rape, including filing a complaint, an affidavit or a medical examination that proves the sexual assault.

In Ecuador the abortion It is also decriminalized in cases where the life of the woman is at risk or when the pregnancy is the product of rape of a woman with an intellectual disability.

Once the veto is established in the Official Registry, actions will be initiated to try to reverse the action.

“We are going to keep fighting; once it enters through the Ministry of Law as LLori wanted – trampling over the rights of girls, adolescents and women in Ecuador – we will present a lawsuit of unconstitutionality”, Assemblyman Alejandro Jaramillo, from the Justice Commission, advanced on twitter.
