The works council awards were presented for the second time in the residence on Thursday evening. Robert Müllner, the long-time works council member at Maco, was honored for his life’s work. There was reason to celebrate in six other categories.
There are around 5,200 works councils, staff representatives and youth trust councils in Salzburg’s companies and companies. Whenever advice is needed, the works council and human resources representatives in the company are there. The ÖGB and the Chamber of Labor organized a so-called works council award for the second time in order to “bring the committed fighters in everyday working life to the fore,” as it was said.
Works councils might be nominated for the award from the beginning of May to mid-September. 74 nomination forms were received. Since not only individuals but also teams were nominated, there were a total of 170 nominations for representatives of internal company democracy. A jury then determined the winners in seven categories, taking into account parallel online voting by the members. The jury consisted of ÖGB Vice President Korinna Schumann, AK President Peter Eder, AK Director Cornelia Schmidjell, ÖGB State Managing Director Marvin Kropp, university professor Rudolf Mosler, Thomas Hödlmoser (SN Works Council & Chairman of the Journalists Union), and Gerhard Rettenegger (ORF Salzburg ) together.
Ups and downs in the life of a works council
A “veteran of the trade union movement” was honored for his life’s work – Robert Müllner, the long-standing former employee works council chairman of the Maco company and a green trade unionist. In the mid-1980s, Müllner was initially a works councilor at Porsche Production and Trading Company. There he took a leading role in negotiating a social plan in 1991 and 1995 and, following a company closure might not be averted, he was involved in a successful transfer of the company to the Pichler and Strobl company. In 2001, Müllner, who is also a co-founder of ATTAC, took the lead in organizing the alternative summit of several NGOs at the World Economic Forum in Salzburg. After 17 years at Porsche, Müllner moved to Maco, where he was on the works council from 2003 and was the works council chairman on a suspended basis from 2005. He also experienced and accompanied many economic ups and downs there. “Robert Müllner was also significantly involved in ensuring that Maco (and Porsche Alpenstrasse) were able to expand at the Alpenstrasse location despite the resistance from politicians and the nature conservation association.”
Leiner works councils awarded
The works council team from Leiner Salzburg was chosen as the winner in the “Start-up” category. Attempts have been made in vain to install a works council there for over 30 years. “After the – this time successful – new attempt last year, a works council was elected with Johann Schlager at the head. And the works council team had to prove itself very quickly. A social partnership between the works council and management has now developed in the company “This has only recently been confirmed once more with the joint design of shortened opening hours from September 2023,” says the union.
Martin Gstöttner and Ronald Freudenthaller, chairman of the works council and central works council at Transgourmet, won in the “Innovation” category. They campaigned for a sixth week of vacation to be possible from six years of service, and for those over 50 from three years of service. Other successes include the company bike, an e-bike that can also be leased and the commuter subsidy of 200 euros, which can also be applied to an annual public transport ticket.
217 new members gained at Billa
Veronika Aigner-Lederer won in the “Member Acquisition” category. She is a works council member at Billa AG and managed to recruit 217 new union members within 18 months.
Schlotterer works council awarded
In the “Solidarity” category, the works council team led by Rahmi Sanli from Schlotterer Rollladen GmbH was honored. They managed to reverse the shortening of the annual company holiday over Christmas planned by the management. This means that large parts of the 90-nation workforce would no longer be able to visit their families. Rahmi Sanli and his team took up the possibility of a personal holiday, which (if it is taken on time) cannot be rejected by the employer. With 325 requests for personal holidays during this period, Sanli was able to convince management that the company holiday would continue to last three weeks.
The victory in the “Youth Trust Council” category went to Demirel Velic, Youth Trust Council at Robert Bosch AG. Velic is known for being passionately committed to social projects and for the voices of young people. His ability to listen and find constructive solutions makes him an important pillar in the Youth Trust Council.
New category: Commitment to care recognized
The “Engagement” category was introduced this time. The winner here is the “Care and Support” working group, which includes four unions (GÖG, GPA, via, younion), and which has been working intensively to improve the working conditions of these professions since 2020. Sabine Gabath, Roland Seitlinger, Rupert Gruber & Markus Pitterka from the Salzburg State Clinics, Christian Freisinger from the Barmfühle Brüder Hospital, Christine Spitzer from the Ritzensee Private Clinic, Stefanie Bacher from the Mittersill Hospital, Christoph Eschbacher from Lebenshilfe, Daniela Gaar from the municipal senior citizens’ homes and Klaus With their enormous commitment, Brandhuber from Diakonie managed to finally be included in the state’s care platform and the corresponding working groups and now become experts.
