Concentrations of PM10 suspended particulate matter, or dust up to 10 micrometers in diameter, reached 187 micrograms per cubic meter on Kronvalda Boulevard and 237 micrograms per cubic meter on Krisjan Valdemar Street at 9 a.m.
Air quality becomes poor when this indicator rises above 50, and is particularly poor when the average daily concentration of PM10 exceeds 150 micrograms per cubic meter.
Most air pollution comes from Saharan dust, as well as local pollution sources. Air quality in most of Latvia, especially in cities, leaves much to be desired.
The situation will improve as the wind shifts from west to southwest, bringing with it cooler, cleaner air. In the capital this will happen on Tuesday followingnoon or, at the latest, in the evening.
Because air quality is particularly poor, residents should reduce outdoor physical activity and sensitive populations should avoid it entirely.
According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is the fourth biggest health risk following high blood pressure, poor diet and smoking.
