“Your Excellency,” Abbas began the short message to Trump, in which he said: “I received with great concern the news, and later saw footage, of the attempt on your life.”
“Violence should have no place in a world of law and order,” Abbas wrote in the letter, written a day after the shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. “Respect for others, tolerance, and appreciation for human life must prevail.”
The Palestinian president added: “The heinous acts of assassination attempts or successful assassinations are acts of weakness and lack of understanding of peaceful measures to resolve conflicts. Disagreements must be resolved through communication and freedom of expression.”
The former US president posted the letter on Truth Social with a handwritten comment that read: “Mahmoud. Very kind. Thank you. Everything will be fine. Best wishes.”
The Republican candidate added in a social media post that he “looks forward to seeing Bibi Netanyahu on Friday, and even more looking forward to achieving peace in the Middle East!”
Earlier, Trump announced that he would meet the Israeli prime minister at his home in Florida on Friday, after Netanyahu and current US President Joe Biden met.
