Very high fire risk in Crete and North Aegean on Saturday

The risk of fire is very high (risk category 4) for tomorrow, Saturday, August 10, in two regions of our country.

In particular, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr), for tomorrow, Saturday, August 10, 2024, a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for the following areas:

Region of Crete

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection has informed the competent government agencies involved, as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the above areas, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness in order to face any fire incidents immediately.

The GPP recommends the attention of citizens

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be especially careful and avoid actions in the open air that can cause a fire by negligence, such as burning dry grass and branches or cleaning residues, the use of machines that cause sparks such as circular saws, welding devices , the use of outdoor grills, the smoking of bees, the throwing of lit cigarettes, etc. Also, it is recalled that during the fire protection season burning of fields is prohibited.

In the event of a fire, citizens are requested to immediately notify the Fire Service at the number 199.

A state of emergency was declared in the Municipal Communities of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Ioannis, Ano Meros and Apodoulos of the Municipality of Amari, in Rethymno.

The General Secretary of Civil Protection, Mr. Vasilios Papageorgiou, signed the decision to declare a state of emergency of Civil Protection of the Municipal Communities of Agia Paraskevi, Agios Ioannis, Ano Merus and Apodoulos of the Municipality of Amari.

This decision was taken following a request submitted on Thursday by the Mayor of Amari, Mr. Pantelis Mourtzanos, with the aim of immediately addressing the emergency needs and managing the consequences of the fires that occurred on August 7, 2024 in the said areas. According to the decision of Mr. Papageorgiou, the state of emergency will be valid from the date of occurrence of the phenomena and for one month, until September 9, 2024.

This morning, the Mayor of Amari submitted a new request to the General Secretary of Civil Protection, requesting the declaration of a Civil Protection emergency for the entire Municipality of Amari. This request was made due to the extreme severity of the fires and the extensive damage they have caused.

The Municipality of Amari remains in constant cooperation with the competent authorities, making every possible effort to protect the citizens and initiate the prescribed procedures for the restoration of the damages in the affected areas. The actions taken are focused on immediate relief and rapid recovery of the area from the effects of the fires.

Thousands of acres have been reduced to ashes

The devastation caused by the large fire that has been burning for the third day in southern Rethymnon is incalculable. According to information from cretapost, the fire has reduced thousands of acres of land, olive groves, bees and animals to ashes without the official count yet.

As the mayor of Amari, Pantelis Mourtzanos, stated in APE-MBE, “mainly arable land and olive groves have burned, with the result that the agricultural economy of the residents and the municipality has been greatly affected.”

He also emphasized that today he will request that the municipality be declared a fire victim, so that the procedures for assisting the affected and repairing the damage can be carried out immediately.

At the same time, according to information from cretapost, the water supply and irrigation networks of the fire-affected areas have been destroyed, while the electricity network has suffered enormous damage.

More specifically, the destruction of PPC poles have left the settlements of Vathiako, Platano, Ardakto and Lochria without electricity.
