Acoustic Energy is certainly not revolutionizing its sector, since this great name of the Hifi confines itself to developing fairly traditional loudspeakers (with some recent developments), but it does so while maintaining very reasonable prices. The AE520 column loudspeaker, which until now was its flagship, will give up this title to a new and quite original creation, the Corinium. Despite its very high-end design, its pricing is once once more surprisingly measured.
A little big
Far from being excessive (barely 110 cm high), the Acoustic Energy Corinium relies on a particularly daring pointed profile compared to the brand’s standards. The front face, flat, is thus accompanied by rounded sides, the box being refined towards the rear. This profile, acoustically more advanced than the classic parallelepipedic shape, is also more effective, since it breaks any parallelism.
Despite its complex shape, the cabinet adopts the RSC (Resonance Suppression Composite) technology already present on the AE520. This consists of an assembly of three layers: two layers of MDF sandwiching a layer of bituminous material, in order to reduce internal vibrations. The thickness of this box varies from 22 mm for the thinnest areas to 45 mm.

Equally impressive, the baffle is made from a 6 mm (anodized) aluminum plate. It is not surprising that the Corinium displays 40 kg on the scale, which shows the density of the whole.
To complete the whole, the enclosure is placed on dedicated feet, with a system of decoupling spikes. The only real sign of classicism comes from the connectors, which boil down to a simple terminal block.
Quite a rarity for Acoustic Energy, the enclosure is offered, in addition to the three basic versions (black, satin white and teak) in a special colour: British racing green. As its name suggests, this one recalls the iconic color of British racing cars, used until the end of the 60s.
Fewer transducers, more emotion?
We are entitled to a small surprise concerning the audio architecture of the Corinium, since this loudspeaker has fewer transducers than the AE520: four once morest six. Of course, numbers aren’t everything. Acoustic Energy has indeed developed for the occasion a new generation of carbon fiber cone loudspeakers, used as midrange and bass transducers. These benefit from a redesigned motor and a slightly reworked membrane. Three-way type, the Acoustic Energy Corinium has a single 120mm midrange driver and two 140mm woofers, all with bass-reflex loading and rear venting. As a reminder, the AE520 uses two midrange drivers and three woofers, all 125mm.
The tweeter is also more advanced. This is a 29mm Tetoron soft dome model. This synthetic material, a type of polyester fiber, allows, according to the brand, to significantly reduce coloring and distortions in the high frequencies.
The set displays a fairly promising frequency response of 32 Hz – 30 kHz (measured at -6 dB it seems). If this measurement is substantially the same as that of the AE520, the Corinium offers a priori a more technical and controlled sound reproduction. Note that if the price of Corinium is higher, it is far from reaching peaks. We have already seen much more delusional in view of the technologies put forward.
Indeed, the Acoustic Energy Corinium is announced at 7000 euros per pair in its basic version and regarding 7 700 euros in the British racing green color, compared to 4,500 euros for the AE520.
