Vertonghen pleads for the establishment of the effective game: “People want to see football, not a play”

Jan Vertonghen believes that the rough dives to fake a foul and the players whining incessantly takes the fun out of the fans. The Benfica defender spoke on social media on Thursday evening following a Portuguese Cup duel between Porto and Sporting de Portugal.

Jan Vertonghen thus challenged FIFA, the international football federation, proposing the introduction of a rule of “2x 30min (of actual play) and a visible timer that stops (during each stoppage of play) and red cards for diving“.

Holder of the record for international selections with the Red Devils, Jan Vertonghen, 35 years old on Sunday, estimated that the “football must evolve as quickly as possible towards effective playing time. Teams that profit from relentless diving and whining take all the fun out of fans who want to see a good game of football, not a play.
