The Dutchman, who is superior in the World Championship, beat McLaren driver Oscar Piastri from Australia in the Red Bull in Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday following just eleven laps. Third was Pierre Gasly, who drives for Alpine. For the Frenchman it was the best result with his new racing team.

The sprint started half an hour late due to a rain shower and several laps behind the safety car. In addition, there was a reduction to eleven laps. After the start of the race, exactly half the field switched from rain to intermediate tyres. Everyone else – including Verstappen – was in the pits a lap later. Piastri, who was there on the first swing, led on the second lap ahead of Verstappen, Gasly and Sergio Perez.

After an accident involving Fernando Alonso, who was celebrating his 42nd birthday, the safety car was deployed once more. Then just six laps remained, which Verstappen opened with a successful overtaking maneuver once morest Piastri on the Kemmel straight.

Further back, Perez and Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton fought each other, and Perez’s car was apparently damaged. The Mexican fell further and further behind and finally had to park the car at the behest of the team management. Hamilton received a five-second penalty for the incident with Perez, which made a podium impossible. The Brit finally finished seventh.
