LOSAIL – Even after a dominant victory at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, Max Verstappen couldn’t shake off his frustration stemming from a penalty handed down in qualifying. The four-time Formula 1 world champion was penalized for navigating at a slow speed and being deemed a danger to other drivers, ultimately costing him pole position.

“I think it was a first that someone’s been penalized for driving slowly. I was just trying to be considerate of others, so maybe I shouldn’t have.” Verstappen said, clearly audibly frustrated after the penalty.

The incident also sent a surge of resentment through Verstappen, leading him to criticize fellowdriver, George Russell honesty, during the hearings. “I’m terribly disappointed. I’ve been summoned like this a few times and I’ve been there with a lot of people that I’ve raced against. But I’ve never met anyone out there who tried to harm the other person at all costs.”

“He always acts very polite in front of the cameras, but when you’re alone with him, he’s a completely different person,” Verstappen said, adding to his chest of pointed comments.”He’s lost all my respect.” The incident, however, seemed to fire up Verstappen. He started the race from second on the grid and immediately overtook Russell in a bold move going into the first corner. From there, he dominated the race, securing his ninth win of the season. Russell settled for fourth place, likely theorizing and analyzing where the encounter could have taken a different route if things had unfolded differently.
