NEW YORK — Justin Verlander pitched seven innings and allowed Jake Bauers’ go-ahead homer in the fifth inning and began his second stint with the Houston Astros with a 3-1 loss Saturday to the New York Yankees.
Verlander (6-6) allowed seven hits, the second most this season, and lost a start to the Yankees in the regular season for the first time since June 19, 2015, in Detroit. He struck out four and walked two and fell to 10-8 in his career once morest the Yankees in the regular season.
The Astros reacquired Verlander Tuesday in a trade with the New York Mets for a pair of prospects. The Mets also sent up to $50 million to Houston to help pay for Verlander’s contract — the $86.7 million, two-year deal he signed in December shortly following he helped the Astros win the World Series. .
