The meeting of the select ministerial committee ended on Wednesday evening with an “incident” between the deputy prime ministers Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open Vld) and Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit), the latter having got carried away “verbally and physically”. Frank Vandenbroucke reacted to the incident for the first time in front of the cameras of VTM Nieuws. According to him, he has already apologized, but denies having “made a mistake”. He calls it “complete nonsense” that sources claim more happened “than a hand on his arm”. “I have absolutely not exceeded the limits”, he concludes.

The versions differ on what exactly happened. One speaks of “verbal and physical aggression” because of Vandenbroucke, who allegedly grabbed Van Quickenborne’s arms and pushed him once morest the wall. Another source called this version exaggerated: if an arm was seized, there is no question of a clinch.

Mr. Vandenbroucke’s spokesperson confirmed that there was a discussion regarding the fee supplements. At one point, Mr. Van Quickenborne stood up while Mr. Vandenbroucke was still speaking. The second also stood up himself and grabbed his Liberal colleague by the arm.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Van Quickenborne also spoke regarding the incident to the Belga Agency. “I won’t talk regarding it lightly. We are discussing it,” he said. At the same time, the liberal believes that it is “in everyone’s interest that we get over this incident and that we keep a cool head”. “We are facing weeks of important decisions. Cut taxes for workers, extend nuclear power plants and reform pensions,” he added.
