The semi-documentary project “Vera” by the director duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel won the top categories Best Film and Best Director at the 13th Austrian Film Awards, which were presented on Thursday at the Globe in Vienna. Including the cut award, “Vera” was able to turn his four nominations into a trio of trophies, which also delighted the title character Vera Gemma, who was present.
However, a duo from David Wagner’s army romance “Eismayer” and Marie Kreutzer’s Sisi parable “Corsage” took home most of the honors of the evening, each with four honors. The two actors Gerhard Liebmann (main actor) and Luka Dimić (supporting actor) triumphed in “Eismayer”. “I’ve rarely felt so wanted,” said Liebmann in his acceptance speech, showing his respect for the project.
For the historical drama “Corsage”, which was shaken by the scandal surrounding supporting actor Florian Teichtmeister, leading actress Vicky Krieps, among others, won the trophy, as she did in Cannes and at the European Film Awards. The quartet of honored actors was completed by Gerti Drassl for her performance as best supporting actress in Adrian Goiginger’s “Märzengrund”. And in the documentary film, which Covi and Frimmel won last year with “Notes from the Underworld”, Claudia Müller triumphed with her literary essay “Elfriede Jelinek – Letting the language off the leash”.
At the same time, as in the previous year, when the MeToo debate in the film industry clouded the carefree mood, the gala was quite thoughtful, especially at the start. The presidential duo of the organizing film academy, Verena Altenberger and Arash T. Riahi, directly addressed the discussion surrounding the cause of Florian Teichtmeister.
Eventually, the actor, who is accused of owning tens of thousands of child abuse images, appeared in two of the nominated films (“Corsage” and “Serviam”), prompting a small group of demonstrators to protest loudly in front of the Globe. “We want to find informed and ultimately clear words,” Altenberger and Riahi made clear. Last but not least, the aim for the film industry is a “transformation from the culture of looking the other way to a culture of looking”.
“Corsage” director Marie Kreutzer also referred to the cause in her acceptance speech instead of the prevented Vicky Krieps and underlined the need to take a stand once morest abuse of power in the film industry: “We can all always decide to treat each other with respect.” Even the motto of the award ceremony designed by director Catalina Molina, “Through night to light”, reflected the ambivalent situation of the domestic film industry in the past year. At the same time, the moderation duo Julia Jelinek and Thomas Mraz led through the evening in a charming and humorous way.
The currently exactly 600 members of the Austrian Film Academy decided on the 16 prize categories apart from the film with the greatest audience. It has also been decided that the 14th Film Prize 2024 will be held in Vienna once more and not alternately in Grafenegg as has been the case up to now. The Film Academy has declared its cooperation with Lower Austria to be over due to the participation of the FPÖ in the government there.
