Vente Venezuela denounced the arrest of Julio Itriago in Anzoátegui

  • The movement demanded the release of its coordinator in the Freites municipality, as well as the rest of the political prisoners.

On October 1, the Vente Venezuela party denounced the arrest of Julio Itriago, its coordinator in the Anaco municipality of Anzoátegui state. At this time, the details of the arrest or which state agency carried out it are unknown.

“Doing politics is not a crime! We demand the cessation of the persecution and his immediate freedom,” Vente published on his X account.

The action occurs just a few days after security forces arrested in Caracas to Milciades Avila and Edwin Moyamembers of the protection team of opposition leader María Corina Machado.

According to the Vente Venezuela Human Rights Committee, at least 151 opposition politicians and activists are detained. Many of them are collaborators of Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, exiled in Spain since September 8.

Arrest of two security members of María Corina Machado’s team

On September 29, the opposition denounced the arrest of two members of Machado’s security team, including his head of protection, Milciades Ávila, who had already been imprisoned on July 17 and released 36 hours later, with precautionary measures.

For his part, Machado said, also in X, that he will not rest until he achieves the release of Ávila and Edwin Moya.

“I reiterate to your children and partners that you should feel very proud of them and I assure you that we will not rest until we bring them back free,” he said.

Venezuela is experiencing a political crisis after the elections on July 28, in which President Nicolás Maduro was proclaimed the winner by the National Electoral Council (CNE), while the Unitary Democratic Platform (PUD) insists on the “victory” of his standard bearer, Edmundo González.

The United Nations (UN) Fact Finding Mission for Venezuela recently denounced that, in this context, the State “intensified the harshest and most violent modality of its repression machinery” to “dismantle and demobilize the opposition”, while the “main public powers abandoned all appearance of independence and submitted” to the Executive.

Arrests of the Vente Venezuela team

On September 9, the Human Rights Committee of Vente Venezuela denounced the arrest of Ángel Carianama, in charge of security and surveillance of that political party.

Furthermore, since the beginning of the post-election demonstrations, the opposition leader has denounced the arrest of several members of her party.

One of the cases is that of María Corina Machado’s lawyer, Perkins Rochaon August 27.

Likewise, Vente Venezuela denounced on August 25 the arrest of the leader Luis Istúriz and his wife, Adriuzka Sánchez.

The political party added that at least six officials from the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) entered Istúriz’s home on the Guarenas-Guatire highway.

Another of the arrests of María Corina Machado’s team occurred on August 7 of this year, after María Oropeza, head of the Venezuelan Command in the Portuguesa state, was charged with terrorism.

1,867 political prisoners

In relation to the most recent number of political prisoners, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Foro Penal recorded on September 26 that it amounted to 1.867 personas.

Foro Penal noted that 1,723 of the political prisoners were deprived of liberty between July 29 and September 23, 2024.

It was learned that the majority of those detained are adults and 68 are adolescents between 14 and 17 years of age. Regarding gender, 1,637 are men and 230 women. Likewise, 1,708 of the political prisoners are civilians, while 159 served as soldiers.
