It is not an operation to close down a city: «It is not a barracks, there is no limited number. We’re trying to make a city bookable.”
Luigi Brugnaro, mayor of Venice, presents the experimental initiative of the access fee to enter the historic center at Palazzo Grazioli, in the new headquarters of the Foreign Press Association. «I believe that, if we find the right key, it can become a scheme on which other cities in the world can work, in the most symbolic and delicate places to make such important places for everyone livable and usable with kindness and respect», adds the mayor who remarks: «It’s not to make money, it’s an experiment lasting a few days. The first objective is to defend the city and make it livable.”
The provision, which originates from the 2019 Budget Law (pre-Covid effect), then updated in 2021, has the objective of defining a new system for managing tourist flows and discouraging daily tourism in Venice in certain periods, in in line with the delicacy and uniqueness of the City. The relevant Regulation can be downloaded on the Municipality website.
The first test is set for the weekend of April 25th. Since January 16th, the multi-channel and multilingual platform has been online (initially in English then with implementation in other languages), for the contribution. The title will certify the payment of the contribution or the exclusion/exemption condition and must always be kept.
The amount for 2024 will be 5 euros per day and there are no reductions. There will not even be the identification of an attendance threshold beyond which to apply an increase in the access fee. The contribution will be applied only to the ancient city and not to the smaller islands including the Lido of Venice (including Alberoni and Malamocco), Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, S. Andrea, the Certosa , San Servolo, S. Clemente, Poveglia.
