- The head of European diplomacy reiterated that EU member countries will not recognize the electoral results unless they are independently verified
The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, assured on October 8 that the solution to the crisis in Venezuela has to arise from international pressure.
“The solution to Venezuela cannot be more than political. It has to arise from international pressure,” said Borrell in a statement to the EFE news agency after his intervention in a debate on the situation in the Middle East in the European Parliament.
The head of European diplomacy added that everything indicates that Nicolás Maduro’s plans are to take office again in January 2025, based on the electoral results of the July 28 elections. presented by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which most of the international community does not recognize.
“We do not recognize that it has democratic legitimacy. This is what the European Parliament has said and the next European Council, which is responsible for foreign policy matters, will say this,” said Borrell.
Discussion on Venezuela in the European Council
The next European Council plans to address the post-election crisis in Venezuela during several meetings on October 17 and 18, at the request of Spain. The heads of states and governments of the EU will be present at these meetings.
“The issue of Venezuela is going to be discussed and I am convinced that the same thing will come out that has already come out of the meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council and the European Parliament. That is, not recognizing the democratic legitimacy of Maduro, who has been, he says, elected by Venezuelans, but everything shows that this has not been the case,” said the high representative of the EU.
Regarding opposition leader Edmundo González, Borrell avoided answering whether it would be a good idea for him to return to Venezuela to take office on January 10, 2025.
The European representative also did not rule out the possibility of being invited to the Foreign Affairs Council on October 14, which will be held in Luxembourg.
“I don’t know what his plans are. We invited him to come to the Foreign Affairs Council in August, he appeared by videoconference; Now that he is in Europe, I would be willing to invite him again,” Borrell said.
Sanctions for Venezuela
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs was not in favor of imposing possible sanctions on Venezuela that could affect the population.
“I am not in favor of sanctions because they affect the people, the citizens, the Venezuelan people. They have not served to change the political course. We must be careful that they do not have an unwanted effect,” the official explained.
At the moment, sanctions do not appear in the draft conclusions of the summit of European leaders.
The document states that EU Member States will only accept and recognize the complete and independently verifiable results of the July 28, 2024 elections.
In addition, the request to the Venezuelan authorities to respect the democratic will of the Venezuelan people and put an end to the violence is contemplated.
According to the draft conclusions, the European Union is ready to support a constructive and inclusive transition with guarantees for both parties to resolve the country’s political deadlock and restore democratic institutions peacefully.
