Venezuela’s participation in the Olympics ends

  • Venezuelan athletes will return to the country with seven Olympic diplomas and no medals

The Venezuelan delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (Olympics), which concluded on August 11, won seven Olympic diplomas despite not having won any medals in the different disciplines in which the Venezuelan athletes participated.

The last recognition went to Naryuri Pérez, who finished in eighth place in the +81 kilogram category in weightlifting.

Pérez managed to lift 114 kilos on the first attempt, but was unable to lift the 177 kilos on the next two attempts.

The Venezuelan Olympic Committee said that, based on the results of her efforts, the Venezuelan athlete obtained the Olympic diploma in women’s weightlifting, with a total weight lifted of 259 kilos.

Olympic diplomas in the weightlifting category

On Friday, August 9, Venezuela achieved a Olympic diploma thanks to the participation of Keydomar Vallenilla in men’s weightlifting.

Vallenilla managed to lift 157 and 162 kilograms in the snatch, but in the third attempt he could not lift 165 kilograms. In the clean and jerk, the Creole athlete also managed to lift 190 and 196 kilograms, but failed in the 200 kilograms.

According to the COV, the Venezuelan managed to place eighth with a total weight lifted of 358 kilograms.

On August 8th, Anyelin Venegas also obtained an Olympic diploma for the Venezuelan delegation after placing fourth in the 59 kilogram weightlifting category.

The weightlifter managed to complete the snatch with a third attempt in which she lifted 102 kilograms, after having lifted 97 kilograms and 100 kilograms in her first and second attempts, respectively.

Venegas became the first Venezuelan weightlifter to earn an Olympic diploma in this edition.

Other diplomas obtained by Venezuelan athletes

The Venezuelan Yohandri Granado achieved an Olympic diploma On August 7, in the first round of the 58-kilogram taekwondo repechage, he faced Frenchman Cyrian Ravet.

The fight ended in favor of the Frenchman with a score of 2-0 (2-1 and 6-2), with which Granado secured the Olympic diploma for the Venezuelan delegation. The Creole was the only Venezuelan athlete to represent the country in this sporting discipline.

The Venezuelan fighter Raiber Rodríguez achieved another Olympic diploma On August 5, he finished fifth in the 60-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling category.

Rodriguez lost to North Korean Ri Se Ung (8-0) in the bronze medal fight in the men’s 60-kilogram category of the discipline.

The Venezuelan athlete Rosa Rodríguez added another Olympic diploma after finishing in eighth place with her best throw in the women’s hammer throw final, reaching 72.98 metres.

Her first attempt was 71.02 metres, she was fouled on her third attempt, her fourth attempt was 71.22 metres and her fifth attempt was 70.85 metres. Her last chance to improve her mark was on her sixth attempt, when she was fouled.

On August 5, the men’s fencing team made up of brothers Rubén, Francisco, Jesús Limardo and Grabiel Lugo was eliminated from the Paris 2024 Olympics after losing to Japan, which achieved a score of 39-33.

However, with this performance the Venezuelan fencers received an Olympic diploma having advanced to the quarter-finals of that competition.

The Venezuelan fencing team marked a historic milestone with the presence of Jesús, Francisco and Rubén Limardo, being the first trio of brothers to participate in a combat sport.
