Venezuelans in Peru can leave that country with their PTP or foreigner’s card

  • The measure only applies to those traveling by plane

Peru’s National Immigration Superintendency announced on Thursday, August 1, that Venezuelan migrants in that country can travel with their foreigner’s card or their Temporary Residence Permit (PTP).

The measure was announced by the Peruvian authorities in response to the Departure of Venezuelan diplomatic personnel on Wednesday, August 31, following the breaking off of diplomatic relations between Peru and Venezuela. This situation left many migrants without their documentation.

The Immigration staff in Peru clarified in an interview with Panamericana TV Venezuelans can leave Peru without their passports. They only need the foreigner’s card or the PTP.

However, if you travel by land, you will need a visa to enter Ecuador and to return to Peru, you must do so within a set period of 30 days. If you do not comply with this period, you will need a Peruvian visa and a valid passport to enter.

Venezuelan migrants said they were “left helpless”

Several Venezuelan migrants gathered in front of the Venezuelan Embassy in Lima on August 1 said they were left “helpless” without their documentation.

“They left at 3:00 a.m. with their suitcases. They took passports, they didn’t finish handing them over and they left us helpless without documentation,” explained Antonio Artigas, a Venezuelan migrant, in an interview with Panamericana TV.

Many Venezuelans expressed their concern to this Peruvian media outlet about the attacks on civilians in Venezuela in the context of the protests following the presidential elections.

“We want to return to our homeland and, if possible, defend our land. I tell the Peruvian people, do not expect a massive wave. Currently, Immigration has not prepared itself to expect one or two million more,” he added.

The departure of Venezuelan diplomatic personnel from Peru took place after the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry announced on Monday, July 29 the breaking of relations with at least seven countriesincluding Peru.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil has described the actions and statements of these governments that rejected the results of the July 28 presidential elections as “interventionist,” as presented by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

Can you leave Peru with pending immigration procedures?

According to the Peruvian Immigration page, a migrant can leave the country with pending paperwork, but must request authorization through the Web page Migration and take into account the following conditions:

-The process must be done 48 hours before the trip.

-The authorization is only valid for one use. If the person wishes to leave the country again, a new permit must be processed.

-If the time of departure from the country is between 12:00 am and 3:00 am, it is recommended to obtain authorization to stay outside the country taking into account one day in advance.

-This procedure only applies to Venezuelans who are in Peru and in a regular immigration status. In addition to being in the process of changing immigration status or extending residency

-The procedure must be managed with the document you used to enter Peru
