Darwin Izaguirre, spokesman for the Con Venezuela en Perú campaign command, called for a rally in Lima on Sunday, July 28, in order to promote voting among Venezuelans residing in that country in view of the presidential elections in Venezuela.

“The Con Venezuela campaign command in Peru wishes to express its concern to the international community about the importance of the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela. The democratic alternative has a widely majority voting intention and it is crucial that the world helps to guarantee that this will is respected,” Izaguirre said on July 25.

The Comando Con Venezuela in that country celebrated a mass at 1:00 pm (Venezuelan time) in the Santa Rosa de Lima Cathedral, in the center of the city, and then moved to the Parque de la Exposición, where they held a rally. According to Izaguirre, the candidacy of Edmundo González Urrutia, backed by María Corina Machado, “has managed, in a historic feat, to unite Venezuelans in a citizen movement focused on peaceful and electoral change.”

A campaign “far away, but not absent”

He said that although he believes the opposition has the support of the majority of Venezuelans, he warned that it is likely that the government of Nicolás Maduro intends to “implement massive fraud to stay in power.”

“The vast majority of Venezuelans who are abroad are against the regime because we do not leave by choice, we leave out of necessity. It is a mass exodus that has occurred in recent years, an unprecedented event. Even without being a country at war, almost 8 million Venezuelans have left its borders,” he added.

He recalled that of the nearly 1.5 million Venezuelans residing in Peru, only 659 will be able to vote on July 28, despite the fact that at least 700,000 are of voting age. However, many migrants reported obstacles to updating or registering their data in the Electoral Registry. “We are far away, but not absent,” the spokesman concluded, adding that they have tried from abroad to promote an active electoral campaign despite not being able to vote.
