- A group of migrants protested outside the Venezuelan Consulate in the Spanish capital to demand information about the electoral process
Representatives of organizations opposed to the government of Nicolás Maduro denounced on Tuesday, July 23, that Venezuelans in Madrid (Spain) still do not have information about where they will be able to vote in the presidential elections on July 28.
Dozens of Venezuelans gathered outside the Venezuelan Consulate in Madrid on July 23 to demand information about the voting process.
María Gabriela Olavarría, a member of the opposition’s Command with Venezuela in Spain, assured the media that they received a call from the Consulate to meet in the next few hours to learn details of how the electoral process will be carried out in the Spanish capital.
Venezuelans in Spain who will be able to vote on July 28
Of the nearly 8 million Venezuelans living outside their country, around 5 million are of legal age and could vote, but only 69,000 are registered to do so, said Estefania Parra Anselmi, a member of the Command with Venezuela in Spain, in an interview with the EFE news agency.
According to Parra, there are between 600,000 and 800,000 Venezuelans of voting age in Spain, but most will not be able to do so due to difficulties in registering in the Electoral Registry.
There are 24,770 registered Venezuelan voters in Spain alone, of which 9,000 are in Madrid.
Complaints in other countries
Representatives of the Venezuelan National Command, located in different countries, have repeatedly denounced the lack of official information on how the voting process will be abroad.
Faced with this situation, members of these commands, made up of different civil organizations, have used their social networks to inform the Venezuelan community about the electoral process.
On July 5, Marcos Garzón, a member of the Venezuelan National Command in Chile, recalled, in an interview with The newspaperthat voting abroad is manual and citizens must write an X in the oval of their candidate.
He reported that in order to vote, citizens must present their Venezuelan identity card, whether valid or expired.
This information was confirmed by the Venezuelan Embassy in Chile on July 22 through its Instagram account. The headquarters mentioned that the tables will be enabled starting at 6:00 am on July 28.
Complaints in Argentina
On June 28, the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Alliance for Venezuela and Electoral Transparency denounced the lack of official information on how Venezuelans abroad will vote in the presidential elections on July 28.
Charbel Najm, vice president of Alianza por Venezuela, denied that details were not known about how the voting would be carried out at the Venezuelan Consulate in Buenos Aires, nor the number of tables that would be set up there for the elections.
“There has also been no information campaign to promote participation and teach citizens how to vote correctly,” Najm said.
On July 3, Elisa Trotta, secretary general of the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD), reported that the Venezuelan Embassy in Argentina will open five voting tables for the presidential elections.
