Venezuelans abroad denounce that Maduro annulled their passports

Venezuelan opposition members in exile report that the Nicolás Maduro regime is cancelling their passports for expressing their rejection of electoral fraud in Venezuela, which would mean another type of repression that has been highlighted in the country against citizens, activists and journalists.

In Ecuador, thousands of Venezuelans have protested in front of the Venezuelan consulate in Quito, which was closed weeks before the elections because their documents appear as “inactive” on its website.

The complaint indicates that the Nicolás Maduro administration has so far annulled approximately 20,000 passports within Venezuela, according to unconfirmed reports from affected individuals.

Since the electoral campaign was paused, passports that had been retained after the closure of the Venezuelan polls in Ecuador were returned, but the situation has changed, according to the complaint. Some of the affected people are members of NGOs or journalists who report on the immigration situation of Venezuelans.

“These passports went from active and issued status to currently packaged, which means that more than 5,000 passports and extensions that were issued to Venezuelans abroad would not be valid, thus the regime violates the right to identity and other human rights,” it states.
