QUITO (AP) — Ecuadorian club Aucas fired Venezuelan coach César Farías on Thursday, four days after he assaulted two rival players, which landed the manager a 14-month suspension.

“The technical director César Farías has been released from his position,” the first division team reported in a statement. “The decision was made for just cause.”

The squadron thanked the helmsman for his work “which granted us the most important title we have in the history of our institution”, alluding to the national championship he obtained under his command in 2022.

The Quito club added that in the next few hours it would announce the name of the new coach.

On Sunday, during the match against Delfín in the city of Manta, for the 14th date of the national championship, Farías faced two Argentine players from the rival team.

Initially, Juan Pablo Ruiz was chasing a ball and, after a collision, he left the field on the touchline, making contact with Farías, who fell. The coach got up and put his hands on the player’s head, sparking the altercation.

When Bryan Oyola approached to face Farías, he threw a blow to his face with his left arm.

After reviewing the reports, the disciplinary committee imposed a two-month suspension for violent conduct and a one-year suspension for assaulting a rival.

Although an eventual appeal to the measure was expected by the Venezuelan strategist considering it “disproportionate”, the announcement of his dismissal anticipated any legal action.

The Ecuadorian club did not give details about the decision taken.

Led by Farias, the popular “Papá Aucas” won the historic title that had eluded him for years at the end of 2022, beating Barcelona from Buenos Aires with an aggregate score of 1-0. Its last promotion to the first division series was in 2017.
