Venezuelan opposition leaders in Spain have described the results of their country’s presidential election as a “grotesque theft” and “crude fraud” and have called on international institutions to “verify” all the results.
At a press conference in Madrid, Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas and spokesman for the opposition in Spain, accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of revealing “his dictatorial nature” with a “blow to popular sovereignty” and said that, according to his data, opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia won the elections held this Sunday.
Official bulletin
According to the first official results bulletin published by the Venezuelan National Electoral Committee, President Maduro was re-elected for a third consecutive term after obtaining 51.20% of the votes in the presidential elections held this Sunday.
Gonzalez Urrutia’s campaign coordinator in Spain, Jose Antonio Vega, said that according to the data available to the opposition, Venezuelans gave Maduro a “resounding beating,” and that the results are the product of a “robbery that began a long time ago” and that responds to the “criminal essence” of Maduro’s government.
