A group of Venezuelan migrants crossing the Darién jungle, the dangerous passage between Colombia and Panama, found an abandoned girl on the way.

The young people, from Táchira state, seeing that the minor was alone and without any adult, took her with them to the Panamanian Immigration office so that the authorities might locate the family.

The reason why the girl was abandoned at the scene is unknown and her nationality has not been identified. This was reported by the Venezuelan journalist Roberto Bermudezwho is responsible for the Instagram account Chamos Noticias Panamá.

The girl is in the San Vicente border camp, where migrants have access to organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, which provide care to those who complete the journey.

9,801 girls and boys crossed the Darién jungle between January and July 2022. According to the National Border Service (Senafront) of Panama, a total of 5,670 (57.9%) were Venezuelan.

By January 2022, the crossing of five children per day was recorded in the Darién jungle. In July, the figure rose to 67 per day.

Central America has been for years a route for people on the move from all over the world who go mainly to the United States, but at the same time its Northern Triangle – made up of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador – is the origin of thousands of migrants seeking American “American dream”.
