The Venezuelan migrant, Carlos Eduardo Martínez, suffered an unfortunate accident in the middle of his journey to reach the United States.

Martínez lost both legs in an attempt to get on the “La Bestia” or “Death Train” train, the name given to a network of freight trains that transport merchandise to Mexico.

The incident occurred in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on December 6. After a month hospitalized in a health center, the migrant recounted how he made himself a tourniquet with some cords to stop the bleeding, an action that ended up saving his life.

“When I was getting on the train, it was raining, there was a lot of slippery ground. I slipped and the train was already starting and I fell,” the young man told Univisión.

An official from the Cosío Municipal Police, identified as Alfredo Torres, helped the injured man following the incident. “He asked us for help, he made signs with his hands,” the officer said.

For his part, José Rivero, the Venezuelan’s cousin, pointed out that those who accompanied the young man abandoned him in that delicate state of health. “I wouldn’t try it once more, because it’s a lot of risk, a lot of work, you go through a lot of things. “I prefer to spend it in my country,” Martínez said.
