The Venezuelan government has launched a military operation aimed at expelling more than 10,000 workers in the illegal mining of minerals in the Amazon region, according to what the country’s President, Nicolás Maduro, acknowledged that this activity had wiped out vital ecosystems in the country.

“We are in the process of illegally expelling more than 10,000 prospectors with the deployment of our Bolivarian National Armed Forces on the ground,” the president said during an officer promotion ceremony in Caracas.

Maduro stressed that the spread of illegal mining activity is “eliminating the Amazon in South America … and in Venezuela,” noting that the military deployment aims to “liberate” the Amazon and “Venezuela’s national parks.”
