Venezuelan fell into the ditch that divides Bolivia and Chile

The man was taken to a health center following the accident, following registering multiple serious injuries from the three-meter fall.

A Venezuelan migrant fell into a ditch that divides Bolivia and Chile, an event that occurred when he was trying to pass through an area disabled by the authorities.

The accident was recorded at the height of Colchane, one of the epicenters for irregular income between the two nations.

Colchane municipal agencies reported that the subject suffered serious injuries and injuries, this following he fell three meters deep.

The Iquique Regional Hospital received him in a delicate condition, so a report on his possible recovery is still awaited.

“The 32-year-old patient was transferred by police officers who found him in the ditch (…) an exposed tibial wound with increased volume was evident, and he was transferred to the Regional Hospital of Iquique for observation and evaluation by the specialist” , said the doctor of Colchane Yajaira Lobera.

According to preliminary information, the affected person was part of a caravan of 50 people that irregularly entered the country in the middle of the night, enduring the inclement weather of the area that is located 3,700 meters above sea level and reaches extreme temperatures. at different times of the day.

From the Department of Health of the municipality of Colchane they assure that during the month of September there was an increase in attention to irregular immigrants, although it has not reached levels like those of the beginning of the year, when the crisis had one of its most critical points .

“Nothing has changed regarding the entry of irregular migration. We evidence an increase in these during this month, since they continue to enter without any brake from Bolivia. We are concerned regarding the silence of the Government”, affirmed the mayor of the commune, Javier García.

“In the period of former Minister Siches, millionaire figures were committed, however, nothing of what was promised has materialized. Nor have we had any response or attempt to communicate with us from the Minister of the Interior (Carolina Tohá) so that she can explain to us what is happening with the commitments. Such uncertainty is worrying,” added the mayor.

Colchane, with almost 1,600 inhabitants, has no supermarkets, banks or sewage system.

Its telephone coverage is weak or non-existent and the primary health service has the capacity to attend to just over 10 cases a day, with the closest hospital 250 kilometers away by car along a winding road with unpaved sections.

The precarious communal infrastructure has been overwhelmed on multiple occasions by the migratory waves, mostly made up of Venezuelan citizens whose exodus, of almost 6 million, is compared to others such as the flight from the Syrian war or the migration in the western Mediterranean.

Irregular migration was not a new phenomenon in Chile, but from 2010 to July 2021 the figure has multiplied by 57, going from 415 to more than 23,000 people, mostly Venezuelans, according to the Jesuit Migrant Service (SJM).
