Venezuelan Episcopal Conference urges authorities to respect citizens’ rights

This Thursday the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) published the fourth part of his message “The Voice of the Bishops”, which would be oriented to the days following the presidential elections in the country.

There they again reiterate the call to guarantee respect for the Citizens’ rightswhich are enshrined in the National Constitution.

One of these rights that the Bishops point out is undoubtedly that of freedom of expression, as well as the possibility of peaceful protest.

The text also invites Venezuelans to promote healthy and peaceful social coexistence.

This letter was released during the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, universal feast of the Catholic Church.

It should be remembered that last Thursday, August 7, in what was the third part of this message, the CEV reiterated its call to respect the sovereignty of the people which was expressed on July 28th.

Ignoring the popular will is illegal and ethically unacceptable«, part of it reads.

«We invite everyone to value and defend the life and dignity of the human person. As stated in the Dignitas Infinita Declaration, the Church ardently exhorts that the defense of human dignity be at the center of the commitment to the common good and of every legal order.“, the body of Bishops sentenced.

They also raised their voices to reject the use of violence during public demonstrations to discourage peaceful citizen protests.

They also rejected “Restrictions on freedom of expression and movement, arbitrary arrests or raids, the imprisonment of people, many of them minors, without due process, the use of disqualification, intimidation of the population and denunciation as methods to deal with differences in political opinions«.
