The Venezuelan Embassy in Peru announced on Tuesday, July 30, the indefinite suspension of consular services, following the expulsion of Venezuelan diplomats, who were given a maximum of 72 hours by the Peruvian government to leave the country.
This diplomatic mission indefinitely suspends consular services as well as all consular procedures, therefore, appointments assigned for the issuance and/or renewal of biometric passports, appointments for the collection of passports, visa appointments and travel document appointments will not be processed,” the diplomatic delegation indicated on the social network X.
He added that, with regard to holders of foreign passports who have been submitted to the consular section for visa processing, they will be contacted personally to return their documentation.
Although hours before this announcement, the Peruvian foreign minister, Javier González-Olaechea, who recognized opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect of Venezuela In last Sunday’s elections, he indicated that Venezuelan consular staff would not be withdrawn.
“I am not withdrawing consular and administrative personnel, so if there is no intention, it is up to the Venezuelan authorities to decide whether to affect their own citizens,” he told state-run TV Peru.
Tension between Venezuela and Peru
The Peruvian government on Monday expelled Venezuelan diplomats accredited in Peru and gave them a maximum of 72 hours to leave the country.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this measure was ordered by the foreign minister, “due to the serious and arbitrary decisions taken today by the Venezuelan regime.”
He added that González-Olaechea “has instructed that Venezuelan diplomatic officials accredited in Peru be informed that they must leave the country within a period of no more than 72 hours.”
The decision was announced hours after the Venezuelan government demanded that Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay “immediately withdraw their representatives from Venezuelan territory,” in rejection of their “interventionist actions and statements” regarding this Sunday’s presidential elections.
Nicolás Maduro’s government also indicated in a statement that it has decided to “withdraw all diplomatic personnel from the missions” in these seven Latin American countries.
On Monday, the governments of Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and the Dominican Republic expressed their deep concern about the conduct of the elections in Venezuela, demanding a complete review of the results and calling for an urgent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The National Electoral Council (CNE) officially proclaimed Maduro the winner on Monday, after announcing on Sunday night that he had obtained 51.2% of the votes, the same result he received when 80% of the ballots had been counted and there were still more than two million votes left to count.
