Venezuelan authorities will deport the team from Chilean media outlet TVN that traveled to cover the protests

The media Chilean National Television (TVN) On August 2, the Venezuelan government reported that military officials detained a journalistic team in Táchira that had traveled to cover the post-election protests taking place in Venezuela. It reported that Venezuelan authorities confirmed that the journalists will be deported.

The detainees are journalist Iván Núñez and cameraman José Luis Tapia. Both had managed to pass all the controls to enter Venezuela from Cúcuta without problems. They were detained by a military patrol in the town of Churururú, near Barinas.

According to a statement published by the media outlet, the last contact they had with the team was during the afternoon of Thursday, August 1.

“Given this situation, diplomatic efforts were immediately activated to locate the professionals and demand their release. According to the latest information available, the authorities of that country (Venezuela) have taken the decision to deport the team members, according to information provided by the Chilean ambassador in Venezuela, Jaime Gazmuri, who has been personally following the case,” he said. The media outlet stressed that they expect the deportation process to take place on Friday, August 2, and that their companions are “in good condition.”

“Televisión Nacional de Chile reiterates its commitment to journalism and reaffirms its right to exercise it freely, as a fundamental pillar of any democratic society,” he added.

Chilean government’s response to the detention of journalists

The Chilean government has expressed concern about the fate and possible expulsion from Venezuela of the two TVN special envoys covering the situation in the country.

Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren said the reporters would be deported to Cúcuta.

“We have been very concerned about the TVN team detained in Venezuela. Ambassador Gazmuri told me that they are being deported to Cúcuta and we are coordinating with Colombian authorities to facilitate their return. We are monitoring the case with the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric,” explained Klaveren.

Deportation of Spanish journalist Cake Minuesa

On July 29th, Venezuelan authorities deported Spanish journalist José Ramón Minuesaknown as Cake Minuesa, after several hours of detention.

Following the incident, the Popular Party (PP) and VOX, Spanish political parties, spoke out against the reporter’s arrest and demanded his “immediate release.”

For his part, Santiago Abascal, leader of VOX, sent a public letter addressed to the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, in which he asked the Spanish government to consider “more severe” diplomatic measures against Venezuela.

Complaints about attacks on the press

Between July 28 and August 2, the National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) denounced the difficulties faced by journalists and media outlets in carrying out their work in Venezuela.

The organization has published through its X account that several communicators have been arrested and others injured in the context of the protests that are taking place in the country, in rejection of the electoral results given by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on July 28.

The National College of Journalists (CNP) has recorded at least 23 attacks on journalists between July 29 and 30.
