“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela announces to the international community that the authorities of the United States of America have once again committed a criminal act that can only be described as piracy, illegally seizing a plane used by the President of the Republic, justifying their actions with the coercive measures they impose unilaterally and illegally all over the world,” Minister of Communications, Culture and Tourism Freddy Nánez said on his Telegram channel.
The Venezuelan authorities pointed out that no country and no constitutional government is immune from illegal steps to circumvent international law.
As the statement noted, the United States has repeatedly used its economic and military power to intimidate and pressure countries like the Dominican Republic into becoming complicit in Washington’s crimes.
“This is an example of a rules-based system that, in disregard of international law, seeks to establish the right of the powerful to establish and impose rules that suit their interests with impunity,” the Venezuelan government added in the statement.
The Bolivarian Republic reserved the right to take any legal action to compensate for the damage, noting that this was not an isolated act of aggression, but a general escalation of actions against the re-elected government.
CNN reported on Monday that US authorities seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s plane in the Dominican Republic and transferred it to Florida.
Several federal agencies participated in the seizure, including Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Department of Trade, the Bureau of Industry and Security, and the Department of Justice.
A US official said officials worked closely with the Dominican Republic, which notified Venezuela of the seizure.
Earlier, a team of American and European lawmakers said that their countries’ authorities would try to prosecute Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro if he did not agree to relinquish power.
Those officials claimed that Maduro had lost the presidential election. Lawmakers believe that Venezuela “urgently needs negotiations” on transferring presidential powers to an opposition leader, Edmundo González.
Venezuela held its presidential election on July 28, the day after the National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro president-elect for the 2025-2031 term. According to the Electoral Council, he received 51% of the votes.
