Step. A Venezuelan has been arrested and charged with the capital murder of a migrant, originally from Honduras, who was found dead in a central El Paso motel.

On Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 1:34 pm, El Paso Police officers and medical personnel from the El Paso Fire Department responded to 1301 N. Mesa, at the Budget Lodge Motel, to verify the status of Carmen Unilda Navas Zúñiga, 40. years old, who was found unconscious by motel staff.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers pronounced her dead and determined that the death was suspicious in nature.

By then, Ortega had left El Paso and was in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, investigators met with Ortega in Fort Worth, Texas. The inquest found probable cause that he had murdered Navas and stolen money from him.

Ortega was booked into the Tarrant County Jail with a warrant for capital murder issued by the judge even with $2.5 million bail.

This case is an active investigation, and to protect the integrity of the case and future prosecution for capital murder, no additional details can be provided.

This case becomes the sixth murder of 2023 compared to nine at the same time last year.
