San Antonio del Táchira, October 4, 2024.- During the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the city of San Antonio del Táchira, the largest Mining Complex in Venezuela was inaugurated with which it is expected that the economy of Táchira will be reactivated .
In direct contact with President Nicolás Maduro, the governor of the Táchira state; Freddy Bernal inaugurated the complex in the company of the Vice Minister of Ecomining Exploration and Investment, from Las Adjuntas, in San Antonio del Táchira, Bolívar municipality.
The complex has modern infrastructure, and will not only produce but also buy coal from miners in the area.
The Governor stated that they consider exporting coal to Asia and Europe. «For more than 40 years, coal has been exploited in the region, but in an artisanal way, which has not generated wealth either for the miners or for the Venezuelan State. That is why it was decided to establish an alliance with the Venezuelan Mining Corporation and we managed to find some businessmen who do not bet on madness or coups d’état, but who want to work; “They did the studies and determined the benefits of this site.”
The complex is producing 8,000 tons of coal per month and they intend to close the year with about 10,000 tons per month. They also estimate that by 2025, they will exploit up to 20,000 tons per month.
“We want Táchira coal to become the third engine of the Táchira economy. The first, agricultural and livestock production; the second, tourism; and the third, mining,” stressed Freddy Bernal.
The president explained that from this infrastructure the coal exploitation will be articulated and led, not only in that border municipality, but also in Ureña, Capacho and Lobatera, where there are various artisanal and medium-scale mines.
The miner’s school will be established in the complex, which aims to train workers to go from artisanal to industrial. Initially, the mineral will be bought from them at a “good price, so that they do not continue to be exploited by small and medium-sized mafias from Colombia and thus producing coal not only to satisfy domestic demand, but also to export.
Vice Minister Alejandro Martínez said that the mineral from that area has excellent thermal characteristics, for the generation of electricity, and coking, for the manufacture of iron and steel, so they will increase production progressively, to be able to compete in international markets.
The Táchira coal basin is one of the best in the world and with a lot of potential to discover, which is why the Government of Táchira and Border mayors are very excited about this project that will once again industrialize the state of Táchira.
