On Friday, July 12, President Nicolás Maduro announced the elimination of the Tax on Large Financial Transactions (IGTF) in bolivars, which charged 2% on transactions in local currency.

“I am signing the decree to eliminate, ipso facto, the 2% of the IGTF. We are already in a position to do so and what we need to increase is the efficiency in the collection of the other taxes that exist,” declared Maduro during the celebration of the National Council of Productive Economy.

The IGTF was approved in 2015, however, in February 2022 a reform was adopted to seek to collect taxes from foreign currency transactions, this in light of the growing use of foreign currency to make payments.

Tarek William Saab, the Attorney General of the Republic, confirmed on Friday, July 12, the arrest of Aldo Roso Vargas and Ricardo Albacete Vidal for allegedly being part of a conspiracy to sabotage the Venezuelan electrical system.

“After gathering sufficient evidence, on July 9, arrest warrants were requested from the competent courts once morest Aldo Roso Vargas and Ricardo Alberto Albacete Vidal,” Saab said at a press conference.

The official added that search warrants were also issued for several properties located in Caracas, Táchira and Mérida, which are allegedly linked to the accused.

Aldo Roso Vargas was arrested on July 10 in El Valle, Caracas; while Ricardo Albacete was arrested on July 11 on Libertador Avenue in Caracas.

3. The OAS requested financial assistance for countries affected by Hurricane Beryl

The OAS expressed on Friday, July 12, its concern regarding the “devastating effects” of Hurricane Beryl in several member countries, especially in the Caribbean, and requested financial assistance for the “reconstruction” of damaged infrastructure and the recovery of its gross domestic product (GDP).

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Saint Lucia, as well as the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada, were the Caribbean islands that received the greatest impact from Hurricane Beryl more than a week ago.

The agriculture and fishing sectors were the most affected by the powerful Category 5 hurricane’s powerful winds, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.

For this reason, the Permanent Council of the OAS approved a resolution requesting the “immediate capitalization” and implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund to “provide assistance to developing countries that are particularly vulnerable” to the effects of climate change and to the member states affected by the hurricane.

4. Alec Baldwin’s defense asked to dismiss his case due to lack of evidence

Actor Alec Baldwin’s defense filed a new motion on Friday, July 12, to dismiss the case once morest him, arguing that the prosecution hid a batch of bullets that were “critical evidence” in this trial, where the American actor is accused of involuntary manslaughter.

Venezuelan footballer Jon Aramburu was listed on Friday, July 12, as one of the best emerging players of the 2024 Copa América, according to The Athletic the sports supplement of the newspaper The New York Times.

The media highlighted the performance of the 21-year-old right back of the Venezuelan national team, who was considered a decisive figure in the Vinotinto’s group stage matches once morest Jamaica and Mexico, as well as the quarter-final match once morest Canada.

Tennis players Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paolini qualified for the Wimbledon final in the United Kingdom on Friday, July 12.

Krejcikova eliminated the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (4th), winner in 2022 of the Grand Slam in the cathedral of tennis, by 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4, while Paolini managed to overcome the Croatian Donna Vekic (37th) by 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (8).

Krejcikova and Paolini will go for the title on Saturday, July 13, on the Centre Court of the All England Tennis and Croquet Club in London, United Kingdom.
