Venezuela: Maduro wins election – Opposition disputes result 2024-08-01 04:15:28

“We won” with “70% of the votes”, Venezuela “has a new elected president, and “this is Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia”, the head of the opposition Maria Corina Machado told the press.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared after midnight on Sunday that his victory, his re-election to office for a third consecutive term, is a triumph of peace and democracy, reiterating the assurance that the Latin American country’s electoral system is transparent.

The announced result contradicts exit polls that indicated a victory for the opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia.

The National Electoral Council (CNE, the Electoral Commission) announced that Mr. Maduro received 51.20%, in absolute numbers of 5.15 million votes, while Mr. González Urrutia 44.2%, or a little less than 4 .5 million votes.

The percentages announced result from the counting of 80% of the ballots and the outcome is “irrevocable,” explained CNE president Elvis Amoroso.

The participation reached 59%, according to Mr. Amoroso.
