Venezuela’s men’s futsal team was unable to beat France in Thursday’s match, corresponding to the second day of the 2024 Uzbekistan World Cup.

The national team, led by Robinson Romero, fell 7-3 to the Europeans at the Universal Sports Complex in Bukhara, suffering their second defeat in two appearances.

Although they finished last in Group F, La Vinotinto still has a chance of advancing to the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams, provided they beat Guatemala on Sunday by a large margin.

Little resistance

The Venezuelan team offered little resistance in defense to endure both the victory and the partial tie they had at parts of the match.

Nicolás Menéndez opened the scoring for the French just over five minutes into the game. With around six minutes remaining, Kevin Briceño and Jesús Viamonte scored in the blink of an eye to give Venezuela a 2-1 lead.

The joy was short-lived for the South American side, as Ayoub Saadaoui and Kevin Ramírez took charge of giving “les bleus” the lead back before the end of the first half.

At the start of the second 20 minutes, Briceño was back on the scoreboard to equalise the score at 3-3. However, Venezuela’s defensive problems became noticeable and Mamadou Touré tipped the balance in favour of the French again with less than 15 minutes to play.

The defensive disarray became more noticeable with less than 10 minutes left in the match. Nelson Lutín scored the 5-2, Ramírez extended the lead with his second goal of the match and Sid Belhaj put the final score at 7-3.

Possibilities

Venezuela jeopardized its chances of advancing to the round of 16 of the World Cup. It was left with a record of two losses, with 14 goals conceded and only four in favor for a differential of -10.

They are currently at the bottom of Group F, with a pending match against Guatemala, which has also failed to add points. The match between the two teams will be on September 22 and Robinson Romero’s team needs a convincing victory, with a wide margin, in addition to linking other results to have a chance of advancing among the best third-place teams in the event.
