Venezuela congratulated the US on its independence anniversary and hopes for a commitment to resume relations

On Thursday, marking the 248th anniversary of independence from the United States, the Venezuelan government expressed its desire that the government of the North American country “make progress in its commitments” to normalize bilateral relations, which have been broken since 2019.

“We hope that the U.S. government will move forward in its commitments to normalize political and diplomatic relations with Venezuela, putting an end to the policy of unilateral coercive measures that affect the Venezuelan people and harm ties between both nations,” the administration of Nicolás Maduro said in a statement.

He also congratulated the United States on the anniversary of its independence, a struggle that “even included the participation of Francisco de Miranda” – Venezuelan politician, military officer and writer – and which, in addition, “should serve as a reminder that all peoples of the world have the right to self-determination and sovereignty”, so – he added – “any colonialist ambition has no place”.

The two countries resumed talks on Wednesday after several months of back-and-forth, with the upcoming July 28 presidential election in the Caribbean nation as a backdrop, closely watched by Washington.

During a virtual meeting, both parties agreed to “work together to build trust and improve relations” and to “maintain communication in a respectful and constructive manner,” according to the chief negotiator for Chavismo, Jorge Rodríguez.
