CARACAS (AP) — With an agonizing goal from Salomón Rondón from a penalty in stoppage time, Venezuela defeated Paraguay 1-0 on Tuesday on the second date of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The dominance of the Venezuelan team was evident from the opening whistle, but it did not materialize in goals until a clear handball by Paraguayan full-back Iván Piris in the 90th minute was sanctioned by Colombian referee Andrés Rojas following a VAR review.
Venezuela, which had just succumbed 1-0 as a visitor to Colombia, has three points out of a possible six. Paraguay, which drew goalless at home with Peru in its debut, was left with one point in two games.
The top six from South America, two more places than in the previous qualifiers, directly access the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which will expand from 32 to 48 teams. The seventh will play a playoff once morest a rival from another confederation.
On the next two dates of the qualifiers, Venezuela will visit Brazil on October 12 and will host Chile five days later. Paraguay, meanwhile, will face Argentina on October 12 at home and on October 17 at home they will face Bolivia.
