Lula highlighted the ties that were maintained between Brazil and Venezuela before Jair Bolsonaro came to power and that, during the government of the far-right politician, the economic and commercial relationship with Caracas collapsed.

“I am in favor of Venezuela integrating the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). We are going to meet soon and we have to evaluate various requests for integration,” Lula said.

The Brazilian president felt confident that both nations would recover their commercial relations, while strengthening their cultural, scientific and educational ties, in addition to reinforcing military security on the border.

Both leaders offered a press conference before national and foreign media following the historic meeting, at the Planalto Palace.

President Maduro, who is making a state visit within the framework of the summit of South American leaders to be held this May 30 in Brasilia, said that a new era is opening in the relationship between Venezuela and Brazil.

He recalled that an extremist model was applied to Venezuela according to right-wing ideology and continues to be applied. From Brazil, all the doors and windows were closed and an attempt was made to invade, recognizing a non-existent government, he added.

“Hopefully no one ever closes the doors between Brazil and Venezuela once more,” said President Maduro. He also reaffirmed that his country is ready to receive investment and business from Brazilian businessmen.

He also pointed out that Venezuela’s intentions to be part of this entity are due to wanting to participate in the construction of new international economic policies.

The Venezuelan head of state pointed out that “the new geopolitics is characterized by two elements: the unity of our America in diversity and the role of the Brics, which is emerging as the great magnet for countries that want cooperation.”

“For ever and ever the peoples of South America have been denied, that is why we are working on the construction of a new global geopolitics where the union of Latin America as a single people prevails,” declared the Venezuelan president.

Before, the presidents led a high-level meeting from the Planalto Palace in the context of a broad cooperation agenda. The central axes of this journey are to seal alliances in the areas of science and technology, agriculture, transport, energy, aquaculture and fishing, ecosocialism, tourism and culture.

In this sense, the expanded meeting aims to strengthen the deep friendship and the commitment to continue working together in a dynamic manner, in order to promote and elevate strategic cooperation to the highest level in favor of both peoples.

Participating in this meeting on the part of Venezuela: the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez; the Minister for Oil, Pedro Tellechea; Agriculture and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo; Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez; Office of the President, Jorge Márquez; the Venezuelan foreign minister, Yván Gil; and Ecosocialismo, Josué Lorca, who will also review the map of cooperation that characterizes Venezuela and Brazil.

On the Brazilian side, the following are participating: Vice President Geraldo Alckmin; the ministers of Foreign Relations, Mauro Vieira; from the Treasury, Fernando Haddad; of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro; of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira; of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos and the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

Venezuela and Brazil have reaffirmed their willingness to advance a work agenda for the benefit of both peoples, which began on January 1 following the reestablishment of diplomatic relations following the inauguration of President Lula da Silva.

agri-food cooperation

Within the framework of the meeting between the two heads of state held in Brazil, the Venezuelan Minister for Productive Agriculture and Land held a meeting with his counterpart Fávaro.

According to a Presidential Press release, Castro Soteldo described as “extraordinary” the day held with the work team of Minister Fávaro.

“We agree on the joint cooperation strategies and following this first meeting we will continue working on the protocols to consolidate a broad memorandum of understanding that allows countries to develop and grow their agri-food systems,” Castro Soteldo asserted.

In turn, the Brazilian minister highlighted the joint initiative to restore cooperation ties and expressed that they have “the largest public company for tropical agricultural research in the world.”

“It is at your disposal with its 43 research centers with all the audits and all the researchers at the disposal of knowledge transfer protocols, of technologies, so that Venezuela can consolidate itself as one of the great food producers in the world for its population” , said.
