Venevisión banned the use of its musical anthem during the electoral campaign

  • The channel issued a statement warning that it will take legal action once morest the “unauthorized” use of the piece.

The private channel Venevisión said on Saturday, July 13, that it will consider possible legal action in response to the unauthorized use of its anthem in political events in the run-up to the presidential elections on July 28. The song has been used in rallies by President Nicolás Maduro.

“Cisneros Media and Venevisión inform the public that they have not authorized, nor will they authorize, the use of their name, emblem or logo, as well as their musical anthem, for political, proselytizing, commercial or lucrative purposes,” the company said in a statement.

Not to mention Maduro, who uses the piece in events that are broadcast on the state channel Venezuelan Television (VTV)The organization announced that it “reserves the right to take all possible legal action” in the event of continued unauthorized and unlawful use.

“Venevisión demands and urges candidates, parties or associations with political ends to show due respect and consideration, and not to continue using its trademarks and musical themes, given that these have the approval and absolute protection granted by the Constitution and industrial property and copyright laws,” the document adds.

Over the past week, the president has used the Venevisión anthem on a daily basis to predict, before thousands of supporters who attend his events, that he will win the elections, in which he will seek a third consecutive six-year term in power.

Complaint over public resources for the electoral campaign

The national coordinator of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Voto Joven, Wanda Cedeño, denounced on July 9 the use of public resources in favor of the electoral campaign of President Nicolás Maduro, which, he explained, constitutes a violation of electoral regulations ahead of the presidential elections on July 28.

According to Article 76 of the Organic Law on Electoral Processes (Lopre), in its point number 7, the use of “public goods and goods subject to public services” for the deployment of electoral propaganda is not permitted.

“The campaign has been carried out with certain details, especially related to the use of public resources. Mainly, in relation to the use of institutional accounts (on social networks) to promote specific candidates. (Accounts are used) of ministries and of the National Integrated Service of Customs and Tax Administration (Seniat),” said Cedeño in an interview for Successes Circuit.

According to the NGO coordinator, the National Electoral Council (CNE) should “supervise” the use of public resources in the candidates’ campaigns.

He also recommended that citizens report any irregularities that may occur during this electoral campaign. In this regard, he urged people to use an application called “Say it here”, developed by the NGO Electoral Transparency, to report these complaints.

Other irregularities during the electoral period

During the beginning of the electoral period, political organizations and leaders have denounced some irregularities, including anomalies in the Electoral Registry of Venezuelans abroad.

The NGO My Vote Counts documented more than 3,100 complaints regarding irregularities that occurred during the registration process. Facts that were reported to the international community.

“The (Nicolás) Maduro regime basically demobilizes people on a daily basis. The international community is informed, that is one of the things that we are doing at Mi Voto Cuenta. Once the registration closed, we issued a report that we are now making known to the entire international community and now to public opinion,” said Jordy Moncada, coordinator of Mi Voto Cuenta, in an interview with VPItv on May 13.

The spokesperson explained that Venezuelan consulates only managed to register 0.16% of Venezuelans living abroad.

“We cannot accept that 22% of Venezuelans of voting age are being left out,” Moncada added.

Among the complaints were: problems related to the request for requirements that were outside Venezuelan law, insufficient machines and staff in the consulates, and delays in opening the registry.
