Lithographion Theater presents “Venebra”, a work for voice, viola and guitar on April 20 at 9:00 p.m.

It is a sound-making experience created by 2 musicians Michalis Katachanas (viola), Vassilis Tzavara (guitar and loops) and by the actress Kleopatra Markou who performs, narrates and sings.

It is a musical performance based on the short story by Chrysostomos Tsapraῒlis “Women who sing farewells”, which in turn is part of Tsapraῒlis’ collection of short stories with engravings by Fotis Varthi “Women who return” (Antipodes publications, 2020). Common starting point nine absurdities of the vernacular tradition, nine faces of women who are in painful situations, threatening and eerie creating “a new narrative of the pain of women who have been, are and will be”.

“Venebra” comes to give sound and breath to the original short story through three instruments and musical improvisations that sometimes accompany and sometimes clash with the words, sometimes abandoning them, sometimes allowing them to recover and sometimes transforming them into songs – either clearer and distinctly, either as dim memories and faded echoes.

Thus, “paradox” soundscapes are created, but also music and songs of various origins unfold as “farewells”, mentally transported to a concert “in the building of the old city hall of the metropolis” with Venebra singing but this time this concert of hers will reveal to us the whole her life – an immersion into who she is, her fears and buried memories.

Venebra is born in the midst of a war, who managed to keep herself alive “by sticking her mouth to a pot, from which black milk gushed forth.” She is the one who, with all her vulnerability and fragility, converses with the elements of nature. But also with the violence of this world, which she sees and cannot keep the voice within her – she weaves melodies stigmatized by death, whose shadow remains her only true companion.
